Protecting your backflow device from freezing

How to Protect Your Backflow Device from Freezing (Before It’s Winterized)

Even if your system hasn’t been officially winterized yet, it’s important to take quick steps to protect your backflow preventer from freezing. A frozen backflow device can lead to costly repairs and interruptions in service.

We recommend that you have the Backflow Device removed and drained to ensure that your device and system remain free from freezing temperature damage.

Here is a customer description of how to do it:

1. Gather the Necessary Supplies: To start, you will need some basic supplies such as;  an insulating blanket, towel or cover, tape/cables, or zip ties will work well...

2. Turn Off the Water Supply: Locate the shut-off valve that controls the water supply to your backflow device. Turn it off by closing the valve. This will prevent any additional water from flowing through the device.

3. Drain the Device: To remove any water that may be trapped in the backflow preventer, open the test cocks on the device. These are typically small valves on the sides of the device. Make sure to have a bucket or a container ready to catch any water that comes out. Allow the device to drain completely.

5. Insulate with a Blanket or Cover: After applying the heat tape, wrap the backflow device with an insulating blanket or cover. This additional layer will help retain the heat generated by the tape and protect the device from cold temperatures.

6. Secure the Covering with Zip Ties: Use zip ties to secure the insulating blanket or cover in place. Ensure it's snug and will not come loose in windy conditions.

7. Regularly Monitor the Device: Throughout the winter season, periodically check the backflow device to ensure it remains well-insulated and that the heat tape is functioning correctly. If you notice any issues, address them promptly.

9. Prepare for Thawing: When the winter season is over and temperatures rise, be prepared to safely thaw the backflow device. Gradually open the shut-off valve to allow water to flow back into the device. This should be done slowly to prevent any damage from sudden pressure changes.

10. Regular Maintenance: After the winter season, it is a good practice to have your backflow device inspected and serviced by a qualified professional to ensure it is in good working condition.

By following these steps and taking the necessary precautions, you can protect your backflow device from freezing during the colder months and ensure that it functions correctly when needed. If you are unsure about any of these steps or have specific concerns about your device, it is always a good idea to consult with a professional who specializes in backflow prevention devices.
